I Got Some Cold Takes
I very much appreciate the lost art of taking a little time to reflect and formulate one’s thoughts and opinions, rather than just trying to be the first one to the podium. This may also be why I generally prefer writing about history more than current events. Although I do like to compare the similarities and differences between the past and the present as well. (Emphasis added because I actually feel the differences are typically more illuminating than the similarities.) I also detest social media and avoid it whenever possible (minus cat memes and videos of people farting in church). So not only should you expect this page to never have a consistent flow of “content,” you should expect that neither it nor myself will ever succeed. Because literally every industry I’ve ever been interested in now revolves solely around one’s social media following.
My perspective is probably best described as “centrist,” although I admit to being hesitant in labeling myself as such; since the connotations of all political labels these days can carry prejudices with certain audiences (and those prejudices can often shift from week to week in the new media world order). I feel that being a “centrist” used to mean that I got along with all sides equally and was great at building bridges between people with opposing points of view. However, these days being a “centrist” tends to mean that all sides find me equally annoying, and the feeling is often mutual. But I suppose that’s just the nature of the current zeitgeist. Still, it’s important to remember that things are always changing, and then changing back again — so if history has taught me one thing, it’s that there’s no point in dwelling on the present.
Keep in mind that I’m not doing this for a living like the more established writers here on Substack, so you’ll forgive me if the page lacks the consistency most readers prefer. It’s mostly just for me and people who know me and enjoy my writing. I am certainly not against garnering more followers to this page, but until it reaches a point where it can actually pay a bill or two — I am just going to write about whatever I feel like writing about, and doing so whenever I can find the time to do it. Sometimes it will be a short blurb, and sometimes it will be a 70-page diatribe. I am more than happy to take your money, but I will neither expect nor demand it…
